Biography
Dr Ahmed is a consultant gastroenterologist who joined the Trust in September 2014. Dr Ahmed has a specialist interest in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and, during his specialist training, he gained experience of working in a variety of hospitals and settings. He has a thorough understanding of the different aspects of IBD service demands, service delivery and patient expectation. He is a lead consultant for transition services in IBD.
Research Interest
Dr Ahmed's research interests include investigating the changes in the smell of faeces and breath in order to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of IBD and to develop a non-invasive diagnostic biomarker. Through formal laboratory research, Dr Ahmed studied the metabolomic profiles of patients with IBD and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in comparison with healthy individuals. He presented his work at both national and international forums and published several papers on his research. Additionally, he has an active interest in strengthening national networks and promoting international alliances in research and teaching.
